Short Comment: St. Emilion
Comment about the wine:
Between upper and top shoulder. Very dirty labels. Healthy colour. In my opinion as good as or even better than the '61 Cheval Blanc.
Comment about the vintage:
Probably the most underrated of all Bordeaux vintages. The weather conditions were ideal throughout spring and summer. However from October 8th on it rained continously and any château owner who had waited for that extra bit of ripeness saw its grapes swell and get diluted. Lafite and Mouton are the most famous examples. In Pomerol, St. Emilion the wines were very good and in many cases even better than the ‘61s. Graves also produced good and stylish wines as did St. Julien. It was in Margaux, Pauillac and St. Estéphe that the rain caused most havoc. The greatest wine of all Médocs and one of the three best of all 1964s is Latour which is drinking beautifully at the moment. Also very good are Margaux, Ducru Beaucaillou, Gruaud Larose, Léoville Las Cases and Montrose. Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion made truly lovely wines in Graves as did Pape Clement. The most consistently good wines come from St. Emilion and Pomerol: the superstars are Pétrus and Cheval Blanc. Figeac, Canon, La Gaffelière, Lafleur are only a few of the many successes here. I retasted over 60 wines in November 2003 and found that almost all wines were still in very good condition and offer very much drinking pleasure at all price levels.
